Malcolm J. Slakter

Malcolm J. Slakter was born in Syracuse. He earned a master's degree in math from Albany State Teachers College in 1951, and in 1962 he obtained a Ph.D. in educational measurement, statistics and evaluation from Syracuse University. Slakter spent two years at the University of California, Berkely as an assistant professor, and became an associate professor for UB's Department of Educational Psychology in 1965. In 1969, he achieved full professorship. He was acting department chair in spring 1974 and an adjunct professor in the Department of Health Education from 1976-1979. Slakter performed research on test-wiseness, guessing strategies and applied statistics. He had an extensive publishing history, including a statistics textbook entitled "Statistical Inference for Educational Researchers," and was a visiting professor at a variety of universities. Slakter retired from UB in 1992 and moved to Honolulu, where he became an active volunteer for a number of organizations. He died in Honolulu on June 12, 2018, at the age of 89.
