Jean George Haar

Dr. Jean George Haar was born in Buffalo, New York on August 27, 1925. During World War II, he left high school before graduating and enlisted in the U.S. Navy's V-12 College Training Program, a program designed to produce high-grade technicians and specialists through studies at American colleges and universities. After the war, Haar attended the University at Buffalo, earning a D.D.S. (1951) and M.D. (1956). Doing so he became something of a rarity in his time: first for earning both medical degrees and for earning them without a high school diploma or bachelor's degree.
A dedicated teacher, Haar held three positions at the University at Buffalo: clinical professor of oral and maxillofacial surgery in the School of Dental Medicine, clinical professor of otolaryngology at the School of Medicine and adjunct clinical professor of communicative disorders. He felt that his dual degree gave him an advantage in the medical field and was key in the development of UB's combined MD/DDS degree program.
