In 2000, Elizabeth Capaldi Phillips became the highest-ranking woman in the history of the University at Buffalo when she was named provost of the university. Prior to joining the University at Buffalo, Capaldi Phillips was provost of University of Florida (1996-1999) where she had also been a professor of psychology since 1988. Capaldi Phillips left UB in 2003, when she was named the vice-chancellor and chief of staff of The State University of New York system. She served as the provost of Arizona State University from 2006-2013, after which she returned to teaching and research.
From 1999-2000, she served as the president of the Association for Psychological Science (APS) after being a member of the APS Board of Directors. Along with her presidency, she was also a Charter Member and Fellow of APS, as well as a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
