Sargur N. Srihari

Sargur N. Srihari joined the faculty of the University at Buffalo's Department of Computer Science and Engineering in 1978.  He was promoted to Associate Professor in 1982 and achieved the rank of Professor in 1987.  In 1991, Srihari founded and became the director of UB's Center for Excellence for Document Analysis and Recognition (CEDAR), where he led research that enabled machines to read handwriting.  He was named SUNY Distinguished Professor in 1997.

Srihari received a B.Sc in Physics and Mathematics from Bangalore University (1967), a B.E. in Electrical Communication Engineering from the Indian Institute of Science (1970), and both an M.S. (1972) and Ph.D. (1976) in Computer and Information Science from The Ohio State University.
