Christina L. Bloebaum

Today Christina Bloebaum is a Professor for Competitive Product and Process Design in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering and the Director for the New York State Center for Engineering Design and Industrial Innovation (NYSCEDII).

Before coming to UB, she was a research assistant in the Department of Aerospace Engineering, Mechanics and Engineering Science at the University of Florida and a National Air and Space Administration / American Society of Engineering Educators summer faculty fellow. Bloebaum earned her bachelor's (1986), master's (1987), and doctoral (1991) degrees at the University of Florida.

In 1995 Bloebaum was named a United States Presidential Faculty Fellow. The award, bestowed on her by then-President Bill Clinton, recognizes the scholarly activities of the nation's most outstanding science and engineering faculty members. The program provides each recipient with a five-year $500,000 National Science Foundation (NSF) grant. Her research at that time, "Multi-disciplinary Optimization," involved designing and developing a format that would enable engineers to design complex systems, such as in aircraft and automotive design.

In 2001 Bloebaum was selected as an "Innovator" by the Upstate Alliance for Innovation, a group of New York education, industry, and government partners that aims to generate economic success in the western part of the state.

Bloebaum was made a University Teaching Fellow in 1992 and in 1996 she received the SUNY Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Teaching.

In 1997 she took part in the National Academy of Engineering's 1997 Symposium on the Frontiers of Engineering--a meeting that brought together some of the nation's top young engineers.

Bloebaum's research interests include multidisciplinary design synthesis, engineering optimization, virtual reality and design visualization, high-performance computing, concurrent engineering, and artificial intelligence applications in optimal design. She teaches in the area of design, including engineering optimization, heuristic optimization, structural analysis and design, and concurrent design methods.

She is a member of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, the Society of Automotive Engineers, and a member of Sigma Gamma Tau (the National Aerospace Honorary Society). She is also an associate member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers.
