James Paul Nolan

John S. Nolan joined the faculty of the University at Buffalo's School of Medicine in 1963.  He was promoted to full professor in 1969 and became the chair of the UB Department of Medicine in 1979, a position he would hold until 1995.  Nolan held administrative positions at many local hospitals and worked to strengthen the ties between these hospitals and UB.  He received the Walter S. Cooke Award for Meritorious Service to the University and in 1996, he was named SUNY Distinguished Service Professor.  Nolan was a world-renowned researcher in liver disease.
