Mirdza E. Neiders

Born: 1933

Known as an outstanding teacher devoted to her students, Mirzda "Mitzi" Neiders has a special regard for the under-represented groups at UB, including women, minorities, and international students. A native of Latvia and specialist in dental disorders, she has been a part of the UB community for over 42 years.

She has received a number of accolades for her teaching including the SUNY Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Teaching in 2001. That same year she was named "Teacher of the Year" by the Alpha Omega dental fraternity. In 2002, she was promoted to the rank of SUNY Distinguished Teaching Professor

Neiders received her bachelor's degree from the Ohio State University and her master's in general pathology from the University of Chicago.

She then went to the University of Michigan to earn her dental degree. She served her residency in periodontics at UB and joined the faculty of the School of Dental Medicine in 1962. She is currently the Director of the Breath Disorders Clinic.

She has served twice as Acting Chair of the Department of Oral Biology and also directed the Dental School's Oral Pathology Graduate Training Program for 4 years. In addition to her directorship of the Breath Disorders Clinic, Neiders serves as a primary consultant to the Salivary Gland Dysfunction Clinic and the Oral Medicine Clinic.

Neiders has served on various committees and task forces on both at the university and professional levels. She was a member of the Biomedical Sciences Study section for the National Institutes for Health (NIH) for 8 years.

In 2004, Neiders was one of three initial recipients of the newly-created award for Outstanding Contributions to International Education at UB in recognition of her involvement in the University's relationship with Latvia. "Beginning soon after Latvia gained independence from the former Soviet Union, Neiders assisted the Latvian Academy of Medicine, advising its Dental School and hosting faculty for short-term visits to UB. She returns frequently to Latvia to lecture and to provide assistance to the Institute of Stomatology in Riga" (from UB International newsletter, spring 2004).
