Warren G. Bennis

Warren Bennis was an internationally renowned expert on leadership.  He was named the provost of the University at Buffalo's Faculty of Social Sciences and Administration in July 1967.  In August 1968, he was appointed vice president for academic development (a position now known as Provost).  Bennis took on the additional position of acting executive vice president of UB in December 1969 but resigned in protest on March 9, 1970, when acting president Peter Regan called the Buffalo Police to campus to quell student protests.  In August 1970, he resigned as vice president for academic development and took a leave of absence from his teaching duties to write a book about the role of university leadership during times of campus unrest.  In 2007, Bennis returned to UB to receive an honorary doctor of humane letters at the university's 161 commencement ceremony.
