Orsamus Holmes Marshall

The university’s second Chancellor (1874-1884), Orsamus Marshall, was a prominent Buffalo lawyer and in 1834 he founded the Buffalo law firm which became Phillips Lytle Hitchcock Blaine & Huber.  Although he did not officially become Chancellor until 1882, as Chairman of the University Council Marshall was the University's chief executive officer when the post of Chancellor was vacant after Millard Fillmore's death in 1874.  Marshall was the author of several volumes of historical writings on the French and Indian days of New York State and was a friend of historian Francis Parkman.
