Seneca Indians Annuity Receipt, July 17, 1829

Collections Number:

MS 62 Abstract:

An excerpt from a letter dated February 1st, 1964 from Dean Julian Park to University of Buffalo Chancellor Capen, gives this historical note: [The receipt's] particular interest for Buffalo is obvious; it is a receipt for an annuity signed by some well-known Seneca chiefs, among them the famous chief Corn Planter. Oliver Phelps and Nathaniel Gorham, as you perhaps know, were the ones who sold to the Holland Land Company through Robert Morris the tract of western New York west of the Genesee River, after having first bought the claims to the land long held by Massachusetts and also the Indian rights to the land.
