Salzer (Richard T.) Head Start Program collection, 1965-1968

Collection contains program guides, manuals and records used by the Department of Education at the University at Buffalo, State University of New York from 1965 to 1968 to train teachers for the Head Start Program funded by the Economic Opportunity Act of 1964.

Sample (Steven B.) invention papers, 1987-1990

This collection contains research, patent information, correspondence and other information regarding three inventions of University at Buffalo President Steven B. Sample: the Improved Perineometer; the Means for Controlling Formation of Vascular Plaque, Crystals, and Stones in Living Organisms; and the Self-contained Portable Device for Rendering Thermostatically Controlled Localized Thermotherapy. Also found in this collection are newspaper clippings regarding President Sample’s other inventions.

Sample was President from 1982-1991.

Photos include University commencements, dinners, building dedications, meetings, homecomings, local politicians and notables, sports, visitors, speakers, delegations, and other events. Notable people present in the collection include designer Serge Chermayeff, conductor Semyon Bychkov, diplomat Henry Kissinger, poets John Montague and Robert Creeley, reporters Leslie Stahl and Tom Brokaw, Presidents Jimmy Carter and Nelson Mandela, activist Andrew Young, and astronomer Carl Sagan.

Photos are primarily 3 x 5 inch color prints with some 8 x 10 inch enlargements. There are two sets of photographs. The second set, contained in nine manuscript boxes, are duplicates and/or variants of the main collection stored in binders. Box 9 also includes some undated and/or unidentified prints and negatives.

The collection list is of the photographs in the binders. Those photos marked with and asterisk are also in the boxes. Photographers for Public Affairs took most of the photos; the public affairs photograph file number is included on the container list.

Photographs are primarily 3 x 5 in. color prints, with some 4 x 6 and 5 x 7 enlargements.

The Herman Schwartz papers, 1951-1978, includes course materials, copies of exams, assignments, readings, publications, personal and professional correspondence, unpublished papers, seminar notes, and rough drafts. Materials from 4 criminal cases where the matter in question was researched, an interview was held with the potential client and the matter was then accepted by Schwartz. The collection also contains research into criminal, business, and regulatory law, motions, briefs, some court opinions, news clippings, personal notes, and testimony from federal investigations related to business and government regulations.

Seneca Indians Annuity Receipt, July 17, 1829

An excerpt from a letter dated February 1st, 1964 from Dean Julian Park to University of Buffalo Chancellor Capen, gives this historical note: [The receipt's] particular interest for Buffalo is obvious; it is a receipt for an annuity signed by some well-known Seneca chiefs, among them the famous chief Corn Planter. Oliver Phelps and Nathaniel Gorham, as you perhaps know, were the ones who sold to the Holland Land Company through Robert Morris the tract of western New York west of the Genesee River, after having first bought the claims to the land long held by Massachusetts and also the Indian rights to the land.

This collection contains working papers related to the Social History Project developed at York University Institute for Behavioural Research, November 1976. The initial project was based on a case study of the history of social structure and family organization in Hamilton, Ontario and Buffalo and rural Erie County, New York during the nineteenth century.

Somit (Albert) Papers, 1967-1976

Professional papers of Dr. Albert Somit which pertain to Dr. Somit's research, relations with fellow scholars, and the evaluation of the graduate political science program at the State University of New York at Stony Brook. Of particular interest are the papers concerning "BIOS" (so called from the French version of its title, "International Investigation of the Biological Elements in the Crisis of the University") which include correspondence, research papers, and other items concerning a multi-national project to investigate the relationship between biological factors and student unrest in universities in the United States, Argentina, France, and elsewhere.

Soroka (Stephen S.) Papers, 1967-1972, 1980-1981

Letters written by Stephen Soroka, 1967-1972 and 1980-1981, to State University of New York at Buffalo history professor Orville T. Murphy. Of particular interest are his observations of life and politics in Kenya, Tanzania, and Rhodesia while serving in the Peace Corps. In his personal response to the political concerns of the late 1960's and early 1970's, Soroka is representative of the thinking of a significant segment of the American public of that period.

Spectrum Newspaper, 1950-present

Students at the University at Buffalo launched a new newspaper in December 1950. The Spectrum succeeded the Bee (1921-1950) and Argus (1947-1950). This collection provides access to the first twelve years of the Spectrum. This award-winning newspaper has been published continuously since 1950, and three times a week it provides news stories and in-depth coverage of campus events and sports.

1950-1962 are available online; later issues are available in print in University Archives.

Starbuck (George) Papers on the Feinberg Oath, 1963-1968

Papers, primarily correspondence, pertaining to George Starbuck's refusal to sign the so-called "Feinberg Oath," a disclaimer of Communist Party membership required by the State of New York Education and Civil Service Law, and the resultant legal battle. Starbuck's case became part of Keyishian et al vs. the New York Board of Regents, which was settled by the US Supreme Court.

The papers include statements of the local American Association
of University Professors and correspondence with Richard Lipsitz, Sr., lawyer of the "Keyishian" case. The papers also include correspondence with Kathleen Holmes concerning Starbuck's participation in the 1967 UB Spring Arts Festival.

This collection consists of the working files of Ronald H. Stein from his time as Assistant to the President. Prominent among these are files containing information about affirmative action initiatives, faculty and professional staff unions, and the University at Buffalo’s compliance with Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, Title IX of the Educational Amendments of 1972 and Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964.

Student Association Sesquicentennial Time Capsule, 1996

Mementos of 1996 collected by State University of New York at Buffalo students during the sesquicentennial of the University and intended to remain sealed as a time capsule until 2046. The items were presented to President William R. Greiner at the 150th commencement on May 19, 1996.

This time capsule contains more than fifty items. The items relate to student life and information about the State University of New York at Buffalo in 1996.

Support Your Campus Police Treasurer records, 1967-1968

Announcements, correspondence and financial records for Support Your Campus Police, a grassroots fundraising campaign organized by professors Alan R. Andreasen and Newton Garver. They sought to recognize the UB campus police for their unarmed response to students protesting the December 18, 1967 recruitment visit of Dow Chemical Corporation, the makers of napalm. Andreasen and Garver believed the unarmed response of the campus police helped minimize violence at the demonstration. Receiving mostly small donations from UB faculty, staff and administrators, Support Your Campus Police raised over $500.00 in little over a month.
