National Organization for Women, Buffalo Chapter Records, 1973-1986

The papers of the Buffalo chapter of the National Organization for Women (NOW) from 1973-1986. The files include clippings, leaflets and serials on subjects of concern to the Buffalo Chapter, such as local politics, Equal Rights Amendment, reproductive rights, and domestic violence. Records were kept in part by NOW Chapter Presidents Paulette Hammond, Mary Jo Egner, and Linda Cleveland.

National Student Association Buffalo Chapter Records,1946-1967

Records of the University of Buffalo Chapter of the National Student Association, 1946-1964, and 1967. Includes material from the First through Sixteenth N.S.A. Annual Congresses (1946-1964) and from the Twentieth Congress (1967). The Twentieth N.S.A. Congress was notable for the controversy over Central Intelligence Agency funding of the N.S.A.

Navel (Jeanette Martin) photograph retirement album, 1922-1969

Jeanette Martin Navel served as Secretary to the Chancellors and Presidents of the University of Buffalo, and the State University of New York at Buffalo, from 1922 to her retirement in 1969 (Chancellor Capen to President Meyerson). This album was presented to her on her retirement, and includes photographs of the University and more than fifty letters from members of the University administration, faculty, and staff, containing recollections of “Miss Martin’s” almost fifty years of service.

Photographs mainly consist of University Chancellors and Presidents, both portraits and at University events. Letters from UB people contain information on the then private University of Buffalo, including details of daily life, etc. An itemized list of photographs and letter correspondents is available on request.

Nechasek (Joseph E.) Collection on Martin Luther King, Jr., 1967, 1972

King spoke at Kleinhans Music Hall on November 9, 1967. Includes King's signature on a copy of Mechasek's welcome speech; a Buffalo News article on the speech; and Nechasek's notes on the event.  Collection also has a program for a 1972 symposium at UB: Problems and Awareness.

Nelson (Jack) Papers, 1964

Collection includes correspondence, job description for school administrators, and other material concerning the Amherst school issue showing attitudes toward suburban vs. urban schools and toward centralization. Papers collected by Nelson as co-chairman of the committee to centralize the Snyder and Eggertsville schools in Suburban Buffalo.

New York State Association of Two-Year Colleges, Inc. Records, 1947-1988

The records of the New York State Association of Two-Year Colleges, formerly known as the New York State Association of Junior Colleges, document administrative activities, including meetings, finances, and correspondence, as well as annual conferences and publications. The collection also includes photographs and audio cassette recordings of the annual conferences.

New York State Freedom Train Collection, 1949-1950

Collection includes a scrapbook with newspaper articles from a variety of local newspapers in New York State chronicling the visit of the New York State Freedom Train in their communities. Also included are a typewritten diary documenting the train's stops (about 90 leaves) and a group photograph with President Harry S. Truman.

Niagara Frontier Chapter, American Civil Liberties Union, Records (1934-1978)

Materials related to the Niagara Frontier Chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) and its predecessor the Erie County Civil Liberties Committee (ECCL). The materials are dated from 1934-1978 and include correspondence, promotional materials, legal briefs, court records, memoranda, financial records, annual reports, and case files.

Noah (Mordecai) Historical Marker Collection, 1960-2013 (bulk 2010-2013)

Ecumenical materials documenting aspects of the efforts to place a historic marker to recall the events of 1825 when Mordecai Noah, American Jewish diplomat, politician and newspaperman made an attempt to found a refuge for persecuted European Jews on Grand Island, New York.

Norton (Charles P.) speeches, 1905-1920

Two scrapbooks of speeches, 1905-07 (incomplete), with a few items up to 1920. Norton was Vice Chancellor of the University of Buffalo from 1905-1909, and Chancellor from 1909-1920. The main topic of the speeches, correspondence, and clippings in this collection is the “University Extension” movement of which he was the chief spokesperson during this period.

Also includes a speech on “The College Idea,” circa 1909-1910, and a photocopy
of a letter from Norton to Stanford University President David Starr Jordon, February 8, 1910, about the development of the University of Buffalo.
