Farhi (Leon E.) Papers, 1964-2003

The personal papers of Dr. Leon E. Farhi, Professor of Physiology at the University at Buffalo School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences. Consist of correspondence, subject files and a number reprints of his publications. Included in the correspondence are letters and memoranda to and from Professor Hermann Rahn. Also included are grant applications and documents regarding the New York State Center for Advanced Technology in Health-Care Instruments and Devices.

Feinberg oath and statement, 1965

Blank Feinberg oath and statements.

The Feinberg Law of 1949 amended both the State of New York Education and Civil Service Laws to contain provisions barring employment of persons by the state for subversive activity or background and made the public schools responsible for policing themselves against subversive employees. In 1953 the statute was extended to faculty members and other personnel of state operated institutions of higher education. The Board of Regents of the State University of New York established the signing of the Feinberg Certificate as a condition of employment in order to fulfill the requirements of the Feinberg Law.

The certificate states, among other things:

Anyone who is a member of the Communist Party or of any organization that advocates the violent overthrow of the Government of the United States or of the State of New York or any political subdivision thereof cannot be employed by the State University.

Fitch (Willis Bryan) Pharmacy Class Lecture Book, circa 1898-1900

Willis Bryan Fitch of Mooers, N.Y. was a member of the School of Pharmacy class of 1900. After graduation he worked as a pharmacist in Mooers. Collection consists of a holograph class lecture book (142 leaves) maintained by Willis Bryan Fitch as a student in the School of Pharmacy at the University of Buffalo.

Frank B. McCollum Football Scrapbook, 1918-1919

McCollum was quarterback and captain of the University of Buffalo 1919 football team, and graduate of the UB Dental School, Class of 1922. Scrapbook, 1918-1919, kept by Frank McCollum includes clippings from local newspapers for games played in the 1918 and 1919 seasons; also programs from a 1919 reception sponsored by the Dental School Class of 1922 in honor of the Class of 1921; and a program for the 1919 annual banquet of Xi Psi Phi, a dental fraternity.

Frank Lloyd Wright collection, reference files, 1904-1997

Series I to V contain looseleaf reference books with narratives, photographs and clippings. With the exception of the file of clippings on the Darwin D. Martin House, Graycliff, and other Frank Lloyd Wright articles, which is maintained by the University Archives, these volumes have not been updated. They are primarily useful for documenting the furnishing of the Darwin D. Martin House during the period it was used as the residence of President and Mrs. Martin M. Meyerson. Series VI contains miscellaneous items including among other things: a transcript of a diary kept by Darwin D. Martin [copy also in MS 22.6]; copies of architectural drawings held at the Getty Museum on the Darwin D. Martin House; color slides of the Darwin D. Martin House, Graycliff, Larkin Administration Building; a historic registry application for the Darwin D. Martin House; a 1938 engineering report on Graycliff, memorabilia, and essays.

Friends of the Darwin D. Martin House records, 1966-1982

Collection contains the records of the Friends of the Darwin D. Martin House, including earlier correspondence and documents of the Office of the President of the State University of New York at Buffalo and the UB Alumni Association concerning efforts to preserve and restore the Frank Lloyd Wright designed Darwin D. Martin House in Buffalo, New York. Includes correspondence with Edgar Tafel, a former Wright apprentice, on the plans for restoration of the house.

Furnas (Clifford C.) Campus Site Study Task Group records, 1963-1964

On July 3, 1963, President Furnas wrote a memo expressing his personal thoughts and opinions about the size and growth potential of the (then present) Main Street campus. He suggested either a split campus site or an entirely new site. At the UB Fall Conference, September 19-20, 1963, John A. Beane brought the problem and possible solutions before the faculty and administration.

On October 7, 1963, Claude Puffer wrote a report entitled, “Should We Consider a New Campus?” and in November presented an “Alternate Master Plan for SUNYAB.”

By this time, the campus community was becoming interested in the future of the University. Furnas called a Campus Location Discussion on December 23, 1963. At that time, information about the present campus and alternate future sites or additions were discussed. Furnas appointed the Campus-Site Study Task Groups and provided them with statistics and other information.

On January 10, 1964, Furnas presented a memo with approximate reactions and preferences of the Campus-Site Study Task Groups. Then, on January 15, he sent each Task Group a copy of his recommendations to SUNY on the Buffalo Campus site(s). By late January and early February, each committee had reacted with approvals, corrections, additions, and suggestions.

Furnas wrote a “Recapitulation of Site-Selection Arguments” on February 3, 1964.

Furnas (Clifford C.) Memorial Room collection, 1900-2010

Collection includes records documenting the creation of the Clifford C. Furnas Memorial Room in Room 531 of Capen Hall at the University at Buffalo, State University of New York and the Memorial Exhibit in the University Archives, and nearly 900 pieces of memorabilia. Furnas (Clifford C.) Papers, 1900-1986 (bulk 1917-1969)

Collection contains personal papers, memorabilia, publications, clippings, scrapbooks, and photographs from the professional and family life of Clifford C. Furnas mostly collected and arranged by his wife, Sparkle Moore Furnas.

Furnas, a chemical engineer, metallurgist, aviator researcher, and Olympic athlete, was the University's ninth chief executive, holding the position of Chancellor from 1954 until 1962 when the University merged with the State University of New York and his title changed to President (1962-1966).

Furnas (Clifford C.) SUNY merger records, 1959-1964

Records (mainly photocopies) of President Clifford Furnas concerning the University of Buffalo and State University of New York merger in 1962. Much of the records contain statistics of the twenty years leading up to the UB-SUNY merger, and include budgets, enrollment (including some with breakdowns by program and gender), faculty, research, and building construction. Additional narratives give historical context and significant overview of the University of Buffalo at the time of the merger and the immediate years prior, as well as alternate paths in lieu of the merger.

Collection contains personal papers, memorabilia, publications, clippings, scrapbooks, and photographs from the professional and family life of Sparkle Moore Furnas, wife of University of Buffalo Chancellor Clifford C. Furnas. Notable are the Moore, Brunes, and Furnas genealogies, Spray and Furnas family photographs, teaching materials on nutrition, and the extensive collection of travel materials from the 20th century.
