Huff (William S.) Collection on the Hochschule für Gestaltung Ulm, 1953-2012
The Hochschule fur Gestaltung (HfG) material covers the range of the HfG's fourteen academic years and later accomplishment of many of the school faculty and a number of its students. When the HfG abruptly closed in 1968, a number of persons had the presence of mind to box documents and artifacts and to deposit them in a storehouse of the Ulmer Museum, which is part of the Cultural mandate of the City of Ulm, one of three governmental funders of the HfG. Eventually, the City of Ulm established the HfG-Archiv as part of the City Archive. This, of course, is the prime depository of the archaeology of the HfG and is expected to remain so. Because of the nature of the base of the HfG-Archiv collection, there is the possibility that the Huff papers include items that the HfG-Archiv does not have. For one, the HfG-Archiv does not have original pedagogic notes and aquarelle charts on the theory of color that were written expressly for Huff by Bauhausler and HfGer teacher, Helene Nonne-Schmidt.

Topics: Campus Unrest, University History ResourcesOffice of the President monthly reports, 1964-1975
These monthly reports give a broad overview of the University at Buffalo from 1964 to 1975 (reports were not created for the summer months of July and August). Heavy on statistics, included are enrollment numbers, at large and for academic units, and with comparisons to previous years. Data on campus buildings and planning, academic accreditations, evidence of faculty research and publication, awards, and policies, and university events are also included.
These reports cover pivotal years in the history of the University, namely the first decade as a state institution, expansion to the North (Amherst) campus, and student unrest. For example, the May 1964 report includes a description of President Furnas’ decision to allow Selective Service exams to be administered on campus. That decision prompted the first campus student sit-in on May 2. The report describes the decision, the concerns of the protesters, and the creation of a University Task Force Committee, made up of students and faculty.
Of particular note: Some files include the final reports, as well as the “raw data” and/or background material used to create the report. This background material offers highly detailed descriptions of faculty, departments, facilities, and events on campus, and may not have been written into the final monthly report. Researchers would be well-served to study this documentation.

Topics: UB PeoplePowell (Elwin H.) Papers, 1960-2001
In 1996, Powell deliberately organized one box of his own materials to be donated to the University Archives. He included class hand-outs and copies of an autobiographical work in progress. He also included a table of contents and a cover letter to explain the documents (the original letter and table of contents sent to the University Archivist is located in the accession folder). The folders from Powell's original donation were incorporated into the larger collection; however they are differentiated by an asterisk (*) in the finding aid. He arranged them into five parts and describes them in his cover letter as follows:
Part I. Choosing Peace/Making Trouble: A Project in Participatory Sociology, 1960-1990 is a still uncompleted manuscript (about 200 pages) dealing mainly with my antiwar activity on this campus. Most of this material was previously printed in the Buffalo Alternative Press and in Catalyst.
Part II. Catalyst, 1985, an issue mainly of the autobiographical writings of UB students in a Soc. 101 class. 211 pages.
Part III. Lecturing by Letter: Teaching 410 people to write a book and alter their consciousness, with a 30 page correspondence with a suicide attempter. 200 pages.
Part IV. Self as Project: On Choice, Consciousness and Conduct... Class Handouts, 1987-1996... approximately 1000 to 2000 pages. Includes here is a table of contents, circa 40 pages. This collection I am now rewriting as a book. I think the handouts give a glimpse of UB life over the past decade.
Part V. Proactive Evolution... toward a Paleosociology includes published papers, handouts, and notes on the role of consciousness in human evolution.
After his death in 2001, an additional 62 boxes of materials were donated to the University Archives. Organization of this post-humus installment of papers was significantly less deliberate. Files were generally grouped as activism, research, coursework and correspondence.
Because Powell was an avid photocopier and owner of a photocopy machine, there were many duplicate copies of class handouts, letters, flyers, and leaflets. Most duplicates were discarded. A selection of the discarded documents was used in an exhibit/installation, Epicircle: The Ed Powell Project. Reviews and an announcement of the event are available in the accession folder.

"What follows is a transcript, slightly edited and abridged, of the October 10, 1972 meeting of the seminar Revolutionary Males, led by Burton Weiss and Charles Haynie, Tolstoy College. The members of this all-male seminar have been trying to learn 'what it means to be a male in American society in 1972, and how, as fast as possible, we can make this society livable.' (Or, more generally, what are the 'deep, often disguised, relations between sexuality and politics'?) The session... was devoted to hearing autobiographical statements by Tom Bell and Greg Calvert."
