New York State Center for Excellence in Bioinformatics and Life Sciences

Historical Note:

The New York State Center for Excellence in Bioinformatics and Life Sciences building, located at 701 Ellicott Street in the City of Buffalo, was constructed as two buildings in one.  When the building opened in June 2006, the Roswell Park Cancer Institute's Center for Genetics and Pharmacology occupied the east wing of the building, while the west wing housed UB's New York State Center for Bioinformatics and Life Sciences.  The two buildings in one concept was designed to foster collaboration between the centers who are frequent research partners.

The state-of-the-art facility features numerous sustainable building strategies, qualifying it for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) silver certification.   This was a hard-won certification as the building includes supercomputers and other computing components whose power and cooling needs make LEED certification difficult to obtain.

  • 2002 -- (September) Construction begins on the New York State Center for Excellence in Bioinformatics and Life Sciences building
  • 2006 -- (June 2) Ribbon cutting ceremony is held
